About David

David had a love of history and ancient objects from a young age. At primary school in Scotland, he got an early taste for dealing, trading choice conkers for sweets in the playground. Graduating with a degree in history from Cambridge University, in 2004 he successfully applied for an internship at Spink & Son in London. The experience of handling historical coins as well as encountering the vast literature on the subject was a revelation. So too was meeting the wonderful cast of characters who inhabit the world of numismatics. At Spink, David cut his teeth buying and selling coins on the front counter and cataloguing material for the Numismatic Circular and for auction. In 2010 he was recruited by Classical Numismatic Group to work as a specialist in the firm’s London office with the mandate to grow the firm’s business in British coins and represent clients in European auctions. Already possessing an eye for quality and the exceptional, at CNG David gained a deep understanding of the importance of detailed analysis in establishing a coin’s authenticity, rarity and state of preservation as well as the value of thorough cataloguing. During this time David gained extensive experience in handling Ancient and World coins and a firm grasp of the mechanics of the international coin trade.

Throughout his 20 year career David has been instrumental in the sale of numerous high value coins and important collections including the record-breaking auction of the Geoffrey Cope collection of British coins in 2024. Working closely with private collectors worldwide, David also regularly consults to a number of museums and institutions including the Royal Collection of His Majesty Charles III. David is a council member of the British Numismatic Trade Association and a trustee of the British Numismatic Trust.

David founded David Guest Numismatics in 2025 to offer clients the opportunity to buy and sell choice and rare British and World coins by auction or private treaty. An established relationship with leading numismatic auction house Numismatica Ars Classica NAC AG provides the ideal platform to maximise the value of any consignment.
